Introduction

Hi everyone! I’m Therese Taruc, a 25 year old Filipina from Manila, Philippines who immigrated to Vancouver, Canada when I was 11 years old. At 23 years old, I moved to Victoria to study Health Information Science (HINF) and I aim to graduate in 2027. As far as my volunteer experience, I used to work at a seniors home where I engaged and assisted in coordinating activities for the residents. Additionally, I volunteered at an office of one of the Members of the Parliament where I worked as a receptionist by picking up phone calls, filing, and welcoming clients. As for my academic career, some of my favourite subjects included anything business related such as I.T. procurement and organizational behavior and change management. Outside of school and work/volunteer, during my spare time I enjoy playing tennis, doing yoga, and going thrifting. I love the calmness of yoga, the thrill of playing tennis, and finding items and clothes in thrift stores that I wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else. That being said, my thrifting hobby also plays a huge factor in my life’s passion for avoiding fast fashion at all costs and further contributing to the clothing landfill.

One of the most interesting things I’ve done within the past year was going to San Francisco and seeing New Years Eve fireworks at the Golden Gate Bridge! It was a beautiful experience filled with beautiful graffiti, an art museum (MOMA) and excellent Cantonese food. If you’re a foodie, I recommend going to the R&G Lounge for Cantonese food and getting the Deep Fried Crab! If you’re feeling adventurous, I recommend trying the Soya Sauce Duck.

As for multimedia in education, I only ever used video presentations and infographics in Canva. I don’t have much of a creative side, but in my previous EDCI 338 course my group members pushed me to think more outside the box rather than creating a simple academic paper as a medium to deliver information. For EDCI 337, however, I hope to learn more about my own capabilities of being creative and discovering new ways to convey information through different mediums.

Looking forward to meeting you all!
